An interactive visual and sonic in situ installation of Jean-Baptiste Barrière

as part of the Etats Généraux de l'Ecriture Interactive organised by ART3000

at the Forum des images in Paris, in November 1999.

Le visiteur qui entre dans l'espace clos de l'installation se trouve immédiatement confronté à sa propre image, projetée sur un miroir/écran au centre de la salle. Cette image lui ressemble, mais paraît à la fois proche et lointaine, fidèle et déformée. Au reflet du spectateur se superpose en effet une image qui vit et se transforme selon la manière dont il se comporte dans l'espace. En fonction de ses mouvements, analysés par l'ordinateur - lents ou rapides, concentrés ou larges -, il définit la nature de son autoportrait, sans cesse recomposée à partir de son image et de sa voix. Certains gestes sont mémorisés et réapparaissent ultérieurement, comme si le passé venait périodiquement hanter le présent. D'autres scènes imaginaires et préenregistrées viennent également s'incruster pour élaborer l'autoportrait en mutation.

Au fur et à mesure de son exploration, un monde d'abord caché se révèle peu à peu au visiteur. Son image est enrichie d'éléments de son passé immédiat capturés dans cette situation singulière, mais aussi d'éléments extérieurs qui le rendent étranger à lui-même. L'autoportrait explore le troublant entre-deux qui va de l'identité à l'altérité.

Installation premiered in January 1998 at the Gegenwart Kunst Museum of Zurich (commissioned by the Museum),  then at the Milano's Triennale, at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Clermont-Ferrand, and at the Palais Jacques-Cœur of Bourges.

Autoportraits nomades : Autoportrait en mouvement on the Internet

An interactive visual and sonic Internet installation by Jean-Baptiste Barrière

on Canal+'s website

A purely Internet version of Autoportrait en mouvement, communicating with the installation in the exhibition. By using a digitalized photograph, or with a webcam and a microphone, everybody can participate to this version of Autoportrait en mouvement through the Internet.

In this version premiered together with Autoportrait en mouvement n°5, one can send his/her photo or even a sonic message to a given email address, these elements are later processed then presented on the website.

In a later version, one will visit a specific website, where this time live image and sound will be immediately transformed, and integrated to the sonic and visual bank of the installation. Images and sounds arriving at any moment on the site of Autoportraits nomades, will enrich a collective memory, and will be then incorporated in the following selfportraits.

Each new selfportrait will be different, and may make come back an image of its own past or of the one of somebody else.

Moreover, images and sounds sent through the Internet and memorized in the memory of Autoportraits nomades, aree shared with the installation Autoportrait en mouvement, and reciprocally: the two memories communicate. Selfportraits of  the ones are haunting the others. Memories of the ones and the others are haunting the present.
